When I first started out as an Interior
Architecture and Design major at Academy of Art University in San
Francisco, I had no way of knowing what a true calling it would actually
be. Growing up under the most modest of circumstances and means, I learned
early on what an impact a little neatness; organization and color could do
to otherwise drab dwellings. And that it isn’t only large scale overhauls
which make large statements. Sometimes a simple rearranging of what you
already have can be a great short-term solution.
Although architecture is my true passion, I find the creation of custom
furniture is very much like designing a little building. When I create a
special piece for someone, I consider every detail from joinery to special
materials and finishes.
I have made furniture for myself in the past and that hands-on knowledge
of how to put something together gives my pieces solidity while the artist
in me makes them ‘functional art’ with which to pass down.
I consider landscape and garden design another artistic outlet with plants
as living kinetic sculptures: constantly growing and changing. I love what
a little ‘green’ can do for the most drab cityscape or high-rise and
consider a personal outside space as important as any ‘room’ and a
fantastic way to add usable square footage to your home. At the workplace,
I have seen outdoor spaces make people feel more centered and therefore
more productive. Everyone needs a little fresh air and scenery!
I am also lucky to represent two very exciting photographers: Clifford
Baker and Clifton Albergotti. Their bold work has elegantly transformed my
clients’ homes. And recently their work has been featured in a Dwell
magazine Modern Marketplace ad. I also have put artwork into the very
walls themselves through murals and stencils. You can see me in action
painting a Japanese Maple mural in my client’s home on
HGTV’s “Designer
Finals”.
Whether it's with an exquisite piece of original art, a renovation of the old, the
creation of the new, or simply a fresh coat of paint, I strive to offer
the varied building blocks of design for every type of lifestyle and
situation…but with the soul of an artist.
